Swaralaya award for Shankar Mahadevan

PROUD WINNERS: Shankar Mahadevan and V. Dakshinamoorthy


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Playback singer and music composer Shankar Mahadevan has been selected for the Swaralaya-Kairali-Jesudas Award 2007. Music director V. Dakshinamoorthy has been selected for the award for lifetime contribution to Malayalam film music.

Mr. Mahadevan and Mr. Dakshinamoorthy were selected by a jury headed by Cultural Affairs Minister M.A. Baby. The winners were selected from over 2,000 nominations received from various individuals.

According to K. Jayakumar, a jury member, Mr. Mahadevan was selected for his endearing quality of music that has the power to influence listeners across various generations. “Mr. Mahadevan has created a unique and innovative style of his own by fusing tradition and modernity. Mr. Mahadevan is known for his racy numbers and as a part of the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio of music directors. ‘Breathless’ is the album that brought him fame through the song; “Breathless,” a song which he apparently sings without a pause.”

Mr. Dakshinamoorthy, the undisputed patriarch of Carnatic music, receives the honour for his contribution to Malayalam film music spanning over 60 years. He has scored music for over 350 films.

The award for Mr. Mahadevan comprises Rs.1 lakh, a stat uette designed by Kanayi Kun hiraman and a citation. Mr. Dakshinamoorthy’s award co nsists of a purse of Rs.75,000, a statuette and a citation. The awards will be given away by playback singer K.J. Yesudas in January. Some of the previous winners of the award include playback singers Jayac handran, S.P. Balasubramanium, Asha Bhosle, K.S. Chitra, Hariharan, Sonu Nigam and music director A.R. Rahman.
