Proposal sent to government Efforts on to boost grape cultivation THENI: A wine manufacturing unit will come up in the district shortly to enable grape growers to add value to their produce. The district administration has sent proposals to the government in this connection, according to Collector Har Sahay Meena. He was addressing a seminar on grape cultivation held at Surulipatti, a major grape producing centre, on Friday. At present, grape is cultivated in 1,137 hectares in the district and the annual production is approximately 4.30 lakh tonnes. Climate and soil condition in Cumbum valley, particularly at Surulipatti, is ideal to get four to five yields in a two-year period. Farmers must capitalise it and boost production by adopting latest technologies. Adding value to raw grape will increase the profit, he said. Efforts are on to boost production and expand the area of grape cultivation. All advanced technologies will be brought to the doorstep of growers. Village-wise details on the number of grape growers, cultivation area, pest attack and use of chemical fertilizers will be collected and all assistance will be extended to the growers. “Use organic manure”The Collector appealed to scale down the use of chemicals and increase organic manure to prevent soil degradation and improve fruit quality. Moreover, farmers could supply chemical-residue free produces to consumers that would fetch a better price for them and ensure better health care to consumers. Special care must be given during and after harvest to contain loss. Cleaning, grading and proper packing should be taken care of for long shelf life and better sale price. Grape growers would be taken to other grape producing centres in north India to get hands on training and learn the latest production and post harvest technology, grading and packing methods, he said. “Cooperation of farmers is essential to improve the quality of grapes.” Later, Mr. Meena interacted with grape growers. Experts from the Horticultural College and Research Station offered tips to boost production and good agriculture practices.
