‘Efforts being made to extend benefits of Tribal Act’
Special Correspondent
The Act is likely to come into force on January 1, 2008 It aims at accelerating development of rural areas
Udhagamandalam: Efforts are being made to extend the benefits of the proposed Tribal and Forest Dwellers Act 2007 to as many people as possible, said the Nilgiris MP, R. Prabhu.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, he said that the Act was likely to come into force on January 1, 2008.
Pointing out that the Central Government was now looking into various aspects of the Act, he said that apart from tribals, the beneficiaries identified included scheduled castes and those residing in such areas for three generations. Stating that 75 years had been fixed for the last category, he said that efforts were on to bring it down to 25 years.
When the Act becomes a reality, pattas would be granted for the lands occupied by the tribals and others. It would be possible to include among the beneficiaries even those occupying Section 17 lands in Gudalur and surroundings since their position had been made clear to an ad hoc Parliamentary Committee by a three-member Congress delegation from Gudalur.
Stating that the Act aimed at accelerating development of rural areas, Mr. Prabhu said that the Central Government in general and the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in particular should be appreciated for the effort.
