‘Despite court orders, we did whatever we could’

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The recent observations made by the Supreme Court on the roles to be played by the executive, the legislature and the judiciary would help in implementation of various policies and plans, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Saturday while addressing a press conference on completion of nine years of her Government.

Stating that development of Delhi had taken place in the presence of very active courts, Ms. Dikshit said some court orders like those pertaining to demolitions had also caused problem to the people. “We were not able to do much but we did whatever we could,” she said.

“However, a few days ago,” she added, “the Supreme Court had pointed out the limits within which the judiciary, the executive and the legislature should operate.”

Referring to the Delhi Government’s role in issues pertaining to admission to schools and demolition of unauthorised constructions, she said: “We could not have said much earlier or else we would have been hauled up for contempt. But everyone knows it was not our fault and we did not compromise”.

The Chief Minister nevertheless also said that the courts had also helped in stopping illegalities that were being committed. It was another matter though, she said, that this had also caused some problem to those who had put their money into the constructions.

On the issue of unauthorised colonies, too, she said the courts had earlier described the work being planned there as illegal. But now, she said, development work would be undertaken in all these colonies. Recently the title of the land in many of the cases had been made privately owned through a notification.
