CHENNAI: The 31-day Mamallapuram Dance Festival beginning on December 28 will feature 64 forms of traditional folk dance and 64 classical dance forms, showcasing the cultural ethos of the State. Giving details of the annual event, the Secretary to the Tourism and Culture Department, V. Irai Anbu, told reporters here on Saturday that for the entire period, the Tourism Department had chalked out the itinerary in such a fashion that unknown and budding artists would perform, apart from reputed dancers. Every day there would be four programmes — two classic and two traditional folk programmes. “We expect over 5000 overseas visitors to have a glimpse of the heritage of Tamil Nadu and return with fond memories by visiting a souvenir shop specially created during this dance festival. Fine arts college students will also be encouraged to provide a visual treat by making provisions for caricaturing,” Mr. Anbu said. The Director of Tourism and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, M. Rajaram, said the Mamallapuram Dance Festival was being held from 1992. Tourism and Registration Department Minister N. Suresh Rajan will inaugurate the festival in the presence of Labour Welfare Minister T.M. Anbarasan.
