CM’s promise to hockey players

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has promised to provide jobs to all the members of the Andhra Pradesh State women’s hockey team which won the South Zone senior championship in Chennai and qualified for the Nationals. He also said measures would be taken to promote the sport in a big way.

Responding to the representation made by a delegation of the AP Women’s Hockey Association, Dr. Reddy said that he was pleased that the Pulivendla SAAP Hockey Academy (in his home constituency) was producing good results.

The chief minister also lauded the achievement of Soundarya of Nizamabad who represented India in a couple of international tournaments and won a gold medal in the four-nation event in Japan. To Soundarya’s delight, Dr. Reddy said that as a first step she would be provided financial assistance to pursue her hockey career.

A. Prasanna Kumar Reddy, general secretary of APWHA, informed the chief minister that seven girls from the State were attending the national camps in different age groups. “We need the help of the State government to promote it in a big way, since infrastructure needs to be developed in some districts where the sport is popular,” he said.

Ranjit sizzles

Ranjit Kumar did the star turn scoring 14 points to fashion VNR College’s 63-23 win over St. Joseph’s College in the City College Old Boys inter-college basketball tournament here on Saturday.

The winner led 28-5 at the break.

For VNR, Ranjith Kumar combined well with Revant and Arish, who scored 13 points each.

Superstars win title

Superstars won the B-Division one-day knock-out cricket tournament with a 33-run win over Lal Bahadur Playground in the final here.

The scores:

B-Division knock-out (one-day): Final: Superstars 173 for seven (Abhilash 53, P.N.V. Ravikanth 79 not out) bt Lal Bahadur 140 (Ravi Kiran four for 23).

A-Institution league: ECIL 294 (M.S. Kiran 72, V.M. Vijay Kumar 62, Rajesh 64) bt Green Turf 76 (Ratnasekhar five for 13).

CBIT posts win

CBIT recorded a five-wicket win over Arora PG College in the Osmania University inter-college cricket tournament for the Ranga Reddy Trophy here.

BJR Degree College 128 lost to V.V. College (Day) 129 for two (Nithin 47 not out, Sridhar 45).

IIMC 171 bt Saifabad PG College of Science 82 (Rajesh four for 18).

Matrusri College 152 (Raju 42) lost to Vasavi Engg. 156 for four (Karthik 48, Varun 41).

Railway Degree College 205 (Prasad 42, Azeem five for 44) lost to Dharmavanth College 206 for eight (Md. Ali 53).

Arora PG College 108 (G. Rahul Reddy four for 27) lost to CBIT 112 for five (M. Rahul 52 not out, P. Kushal 51).

Vikram in final

Vikram Nagpal of JHIC scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over Narlekar in the 35 years & above category semifinals in the Radha Smelters-JHIC inter-club tennis tournament here.

Easy for Tanzania

Tanzania Football Club scored a 6-0 win over Good Faith FC in the GHMC football tournament here.

Dominic and Dullah netted a brace each and Mallik and Frank one each for the winner.

Other results: Munsif FC 9 (Mozzam 3, Fareed 3, Siraj, Azeem, Aslam) bt Mallepally PG 0; Hyd Rangers 4 (Akbar 3, Zaki 1) bt SAAP FC 2.

Selection trials

Osmania University will organise selection trials for inter-University best physique, weightlifting and powerlifting championships at the Lal Bahadur Stadium from December 19 to 20.

Railways ‘A’ moves up

Railways ‘A’ defeated Andhra Pradesh 20-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-14, 17-15 in the first semifinal of the fourth Kasala Ramaswamy & Laxmi Devi memorial invitation volleyball tournament here on Saturday.

For the winner, Ashok and Varma combined well while for the loser, Kasi and Kumar played well.

In another match, Railway ‘B’ got the better of SAAP Centre of Excellence 25-20, 25-21, 25-12.

Bodybuilding competitions

Telangana Amateur Bodybuilding Association will organise ‘Mr.Telangana’ bodybuilding competitions on December 16 as part of the birthday celebrations of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee at the Lingareddy Function Hall in Ramanthapur from 7.30 p.m.
