RIDING HIGH: P. Basumatay (astride Pralay) won the first place in the jumping medium normal event.

CHENNAI: This Havildar has been training young officers at the ASC Centre and College in Bangalore for the past four years. At the Mohite Stadium, Officers Training Academy on Saturday, P. Basumatay (on Pralay) came up with a wonderful display to clinch the first place in the jumping medium normal event of the Panasonic National equestrian championship.

Basumatay enjoyed a perfect first round, clearing all the hurdles with ease and grace. He, however, was under pressure in the second and final round, incurring eight penalties.

On final count, Basumatay was tied with Arun Maribashetty, who too had incurred eight penalties. Basumatay, a native of Assam, was adjudged the winner because of his better timing of 85.28s compared to Maribashetty’s 88.68s.

“This is an important title for me as the competition was quite tough here. I used the same horse in the preliminary National show-jumping in Chandigarh in 2004. Since this one is a higher grade event, the win is more special,” said the 31-year-old.

President’s Body Guard Sajjan Kumar did an excellent first round like Basumatay but the former faltered badly in the second incurring 12 penalties. Of all the riders, Kumar had the best timing of 80.95, finishing third.

The results: Jumping medium normal: 1. P. Basumatay on Pralay (ASC Centre and College) eight penalties, 2. Arun Maribashetty on Archives (Karnataka) eight penalties, 3. Sajjan Kumar on Victor (President’s Body Guard) 12, 4. Major Rohit Dagar on Arjuna (61st Cavalry) 12.

Jumping novice technical (individual): 1. N.C. Subbaya (Riding Susan), 2. Maj. Rohit Dagar (Gazab), 3. Dafedar Kuldeep (Magician), 4. Yashaan (Napolean).
