Rich tributes paid to martyrs

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Eastern Naval Command observed the 36th anniversary of Vijay Diwas on Sunday by paying rich tributes to the personnel of armed forces who made the supreme sacrifice by laying down their lives in various operations in 1971 war.

Wreaths were placed at Amar Jawan Jyoti in the War Memorial on the beach road. Rear Admiral Raman Prabhat, Director-General Naval Project, laid the wreath on behalf of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, ENC.

A 50-men armed guard of the Navy commanded by Lt. Cdr. Rajiv Sardana of INS Sindhukirti, took part in a parade at the venue and a two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the martyrs.

Vice-Admiral (retd.) A.V. Narayana Rao, president of Naval Foundation, Commodore G.V. Babu, Commanding Officer of INS Circars and a few other civil dignitaries from Zilla Sainik Board and Purva Sainik Sewa Parishad were present.

The defence services all over the country observe Vijay Diwas on December 16 to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in 1971.

On this day at Dhaka, the Pakistani forces, under the command of Lt. General A.A.K. Niazi, surrendered in the presence of three tri-service theatre commanders of Indian armed forces.
