KANNUR: A two-day State-level workshop for power survey facilities began at Kannapuram, near here, on Sunday under the aegis of the Total Energy Security Mission, Planning Board and the Power Department. The workshop is being held as part of the initiative to hold a power survey in 300 select local bodies in the State with the objective of ensuring total electricity connection in the State by 2012 and quality power supply. Inaugurating the workshop, M. Prakashan, MLA, said the energy sector in the country was in focus in the wake of the proposed Indo-U.S. nuclear deal. The energy sector all over the world was now seen as an area for exploitation, he said. With the introduction of globalisation, the services sector had been identified as a sector with huge profit potential, he said adding that global finance interests were now focussing on the services sector, which included the energy sector. The MLA said the Union government’s power policy envisaged withdrawal of all subsidies in the power sector. Mr. Prakashan said ensuring power supply to the marginalised sections, including Adivasis, Dalits and economically backward communities was a major challenge. The State had to explore conventional and non-conventional energy sources such as solar and wind energy, he said. Planning Board member C.P. Narayanan, who presided over the inaugural function, said the power survey being planned in 294 grama panchayats, four muncipalities and two corporations would include local-level participatory initiative to identify households having no power connection.
