Seven injured in clash over land

13 persons

SAGAR: Kagodu, a village in Sagar taluk which witnessed the first-ever agrarian movement after Independence in the early 50s seeking abolition of tenancy system, saw a clash between two groups following a dispute over government land.

Simmering differences between two groups over the grant of a piece of land bearing survey number 284 in the village for the last one month reportedly erupted in a clash between them on Friday night in which seven persons, including a woman, were injured.

They were admitted to the local government hospital here while three of them who were injured seriously were shifted to the Mcgann Hospital in Shimoga.

It was stated that the gram panchayat wanted to reserve the land in question for public use, while the village improvement committee desired that it be distributed among the landless in the village. Allegations and counter allegations were made over the issue relating to the land in question.

While one group reportedly argued that there was no need for distributing the land reserved for the public use as there were no landless people in the village, the other group was pressing for it.

The police registered cases against 13 persons belonging to both groups on the separate complaints made by Muttana Ganapathy and Krishnappa. No arrests have been made so far.
