All-weather roads planned in villages with a population of 1,000

Rs.14 crore granted to repair stretch between Bhadravati and Shimoga

Opposition parties accused of indulging in ‘dirty’ politics

CHIKMAGALUR: Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways K.H. Muniyappa has said that the Union Government is in constant touch with the Governor of Karnataka with regard to implementation of development works in the State.

Speaking to presspersons in Kadur on Saturday, Mr. Muniyappa alleged that the Opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party were indulging in dirty politics and spreading misinformation about the achievements of the Union Government.

Giving details of some of the achievements of the United Progressive Alliance Government, he said 24 lakh hectares of land had been brought under irrigation, 12,198 km of rural roads had been developed and about eight lakh houses constructed.

Complaints

Responding to complaints about the sorry state of National Highway 206 which passes through Kadur, the Minister said Rs. 14 crore had been granted to repair the stretch between Bhadravati and Shimoga.

Pointing out that it was the responsibility of the State Government to submit proposals to the Centre and to implement the works, he said Rs. 30 crore had been released to repair the Shiradi Ghat road leading to Mangalore.

Inaugurating Bharat Nirman, a public information campaign organised by the Press Information Bureau, Mr. Muniyappa said the Union Government proposed to construct all-weather roads to villages with a population of 1,000 by the end of 2009.

Stating that villages with a population of 500 in the hilly areas would also be covered under this scheme, he called upon all elected representatives to ensure that the welfare programmes of the government reached eligible beneficiaries.

D.C. Srikantappa, MP, presided. Presidents and vice-presidents of the zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat and K. Sundar Naik, zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer, were present.

BJP workers staged a black flag demonstration against the Minister demanding that repairs to the national highway and the Kadur-Mangalore state highway be taken up immediately.
