Old Vizag, still

It is sad that the corporation, airlines and the media mostly use the word ‘Vizag’ referring to Visakhapatnam while in the case of all others such as Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or even Vijayawada and Vadodara, the earlier names are never used after they were changed.

The telling photo of trees being felled on VIP road for widening and elsewhere against the forest and preservation of environment laws shows the lack of sincerity with which we act. In Delhi, when the road to Kutab was to be widened and for putting up Metro, most of the trees were scrupulously avoided being cut and planning was done accordingly. Here, the corporation and highway authorities merrily cut full grown trees for widening the roads, etc. Cleanliness, anyway is not being maintained by the Corporation, let it at least, maintain the greenery of this city all over, including in the projects of tourism, SEZs and the like.

Already, a number of hills surrounding the city have vanished. They used to create awe among the visitors coming by road or rail by revealing more and more of the city as one was approaching like a new bride.

Damaged road

There is heavy traffic flow on the port connectivity road from Gnanapuram junction/Ramp B in port area to Ayyappa temple junction in Sheila Nagar which is connected to the National Highway No. 5. On the flyover bridge approaching Gnanapuram junction (Kailasabhoomi side, the road is badly damaged. Travelling on this stretch is a nightmare. Also, there are no street lights which will cause accidents.

The plain looking road has many bumps which cannot be seen at moderate speeds. Uneven road surface has resulted in the material falling down and spreading on the road.

Vehicles are also getting damaged frequently due to potholes. The tollgate on this road charges Rs.10 for four wheelers for one passage but road maintenance remains very poor. The authorities concerned should immediately take corrective steps.
