PUDUCHERRY: The Police Department has formed a cooperative society to ensure housing facility for the policemen in the Union Territory. Director-General of Police A.S. Khan inaugurated the Pondicherry Police Personnel Co-operative Housing Society at a function held here on Saturday. Welcoming the move to provide housing facility for the policemen, he said steps should be taken to ensure participation of the entire force in the functioning of the Society. The decision to form the Society was long “overdue” and it was now the responsibility of the department to set things moving, he said. The DGP would be the president of the Society. Identifying landSenior Superintendent of Police (Crime and Intelligence) B. Srikanth, who would be the vice-president of the Society, said the primary task of the organisation was to identify land for distribution to the policemen. The identified sites would be converted into plots for distribution to them through lots, he said. 3,000 to benefitAround 3,000 policemen were to benefit from this initiative, he said, adding that those who wanted to avail themselves of the assistance should become members of the Society after paying a fee of Rs. 1,500. Rs. 15 lakh loanThe policemen could raise a loan up to Rs. 15 lakh towards construction of new houses on the allotted plot.
