SECURELY PEGGED DOWN: The venue of the 34th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children 2007 being spruced up in Puducherry. PUDUCHERRY: The stage is set for the conduct of the 34th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children 2007 here from Friday. The venue, the Indira Gandhi Sports Stadium at Uppalam, has been spruced up to host the event, which will see the participation of around 200 children from 26 States exhibiting their talent in science and technology. The students, who have come first in the State-level science expo held in different parts of the country, will take part in the seven-day event. They will showcase their creations at the stalls at the venue. According to a release from Director of School Education G. Ragesh Chandra, President Prathiba Patil would inaugurate the exhibition. One of the highlights of the event would be the “Jala Samarpana” by the President using the water brought by the students from different States for a sapling. This would stand on a par with the Aurocity built with sand brought from different countries. Another unique aspect of the event would be the unveiling of 6,000-foot mega banner painted by students belonging to Puducherry, the release said. Elaborate arrangements had been made to transport and accommodate the students, besides entertaining the young scientists. Arrangements had been made at the Goubert Marriage Hall to prepare food exclusively for the participants. The students would be accommodated at Mathias Higher Secondary School and Kathirgaman Higher Secondary School, the release said. The national science exhibition has its genesis in 1971, organised by the National Council for Education Research and Training and the University Grants Commission. It aimed at popularising science among the student community, the release said.
