A unique initiative of villagers

Come together for all-round development of Haryana village

Clean streets, plant trees to curb pollution, build toilets for women, prepare drainage system

With a population of over 2000 people the village has remained crime free so far, says sarpanch

Sonepat: Residents of Garhi Kalan village in Haryana’s Sonepat district have set a unique example of people’s initiative by coming together for its all-round development and making it clean and crime-free.

People here have given a face-lift to the village by cleaning the local streets and road, planting trees to curb pollution, building toilets for women and preparing drainage system, said a village sarpanch Koomat while speaking to the officials of the district administration and mediapersons who visited the village on the panchayat members’ invitation.

The streets and roads here look cleaner and are free of potholes. The residents get up by 4 a.m. and work for the cleanliness of this village in Ganaur sub-division here, he said.

People have planted about 450 saplings here for making the area pollution-free, the sarpanch said adding they have also made arrangements for the drainage of storm water. Amar, a panch here, had constructed as many as 45 toilets for the women residents without taking a single penny from the people or the gram panchayat here, he said.

All tax paid

He claimed the villagers had been paying their chullah tax and electricity bills regularly for the past 30 years and no amount was due against anyone here.

Koomat also claimed the village, with a population of over 2000 people, had remained crime free so far as the police had not registered any criminal case against anyone here.

The State Government, he said, had given a cash reward to the village two years ago for its all-round development and the unique initiative taken by the villagers.
