Kudos to Lok Satta

It is unfortunate that Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Finance Minister K. Rosaiah have not been regular in submitting to the Assembly a declaration of their assets. It is more ironical that some of the members of the Ethics Committee are also defaulters on this count. The Lok Satta Party, which made this revelation by making public how elected representatives take rules for granted, deserves a pat for the commendable job. Kakuturu Nagaraja Rao

Disturbing trend

Notwithstanding the rapid advancements made in the field of information technology, people seem to be resorting to a backward march when it comes to traits like courtesy and ethics. It is disturbing to note how people overlook their fundamental duties. The other day, it came as a rude shock to see people conveniently ignoring the incessantly honking siren of an ambulance heading to a hospital, carrying a patient battling for life. It took an individual’s initiative to alight from his two-wheeler and force the passing vehicles to stop by making a hand gesture to make way for the ambulance.

Retailers taking customers for a ride

Taking undue advantage of the several loopholes in the existing ‘check system’, many small retailers take the gullible lot among their customers for a ride by charging rates that exceed the prescribed M.R.P. The Legal Metrology Department, which has been entrusted with the task of maintaining a vigil on these factors, has not been able to do a thorough job apparently due to its own shortcomings. The authorities concerned should shift the responsibility to some other wing for effective results.
