“Bus terminus will be improved and a ramp provided” “Rs.10 crore allotted for laying BG line between Tindivanam and Tiruvannamalai”
TIRUVANNAMALAI: All the stations on the erstwhile Katpadi-Villupuram metre gauge section, now under conversion to broad gauge, would be remodelled as part of the gauge conversion work, according to R. Velu, Union Minister of State for Railways.
Talking to reporters at the construction site of a bridge across the Cheyyar in Karayambadi near Kalasapakkam on Saturday, Mr. Velu said that the existing station building would be extended.
Four broad gauge tracks
The station would have four broad gauge tracks with high level platforms, facilities for loading and unloading of goods, VIP siding and a facade resembling a temple ‘gopuram.’ It would also have a new foot overbridge.
The Villupuram Junction would have a new building, which would have a concrete ballast between the two rails instead of a stone ballast.
A foot overbridge would be constructed to connect all the six platforms. It would also have a VIP lounge.
The building would have a 3,000-sqm built-up area, which would accommodate a waiting hall, four computerised advance reservation counters, four current booking counters, pay-and-use toilets, five two-bed room retiring rooms and a cloak room. It would have a circulating area with a car park and two-wheeler park.
The bus terminus would be improved and a ramp would be provided for the physically disabled, Mr. Velu said.
A sum of Rs.10 crore has been allotted this year for the laying of a new broad gauge line between Tindivanam and Tiruvannamalai .
Journey shorter
The new line would shorten the journey from Chennai to Tiruvannamalai by about 30 km.
This would be owing to operation of trains from Chennai to Tiruvannamalai via Tindivanam instead of via Villupuram, Mr. Velu said.
