Samiti campaigning for saving crops, saving the girl child and bringing continuing education Women in State suffer from domestic violence and dowry menace, say HGVS activists SHIMLA: The voluntary mass organisation Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti (HGVS), which is also part of the national people’s science movement, has demanded all political parties to clarify their understanding of issues relating to the people of Himachal. Spokesperson of the organisation O.P. Bhuriata, in a media interaction here on Sunday, said that political parties do not include people’s issues in their political agendas. The mass non governmental organisation, which is working for the past two decades in the fields of literacy and science popularisation, is campaigning for Kheti Bachao (save the crops), Beti Bachao (save the girl child) and trying to bring in continuing education in Himachal. These issues are above party politics and party ideologies, feel the HGVS members. Monkey menaceIn an open letter to all political parties the Samiti has demanded the lifting of a ban on export of monkeys, their scientific culling and providing watch and ward staff in the fields under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act schemes so that the farmers crops can be saved. Though the parties talk about women empowerment there is hardly anything being done about the female foeticide issue in the State. The women in the State suffer from domestic violence, dowry menace and have no participation in political or policy decisions, they said. The Samiti has also asked the parties to clear their stand on 33 per cent reservation and the amount earmarked for women empowerment in the State. The organisation has also demanded an immediate implementation of the continuing education programme which was not taken up by the incumbent government due to scepticism and lack of vision on how to literate a population of more than 5 lakh in the State.
