New panel tomorrow

Kozhikode: The three-day Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) district conference began at the Tagore Centenary Hall (Mathai Chacko Nagar) here on Sunday. Party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the conference.

Mr. Vijayan said that anti-communist forces led by the U.S. were trying to weaken the CPI(M), which had become a dominant player at the Centre. The events at Nandigram in West Bengal were led by the Trinamool Congress, the Socialist Unity Centre of India, Maoists and extremist Muslim organisations. It had the support of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Mr. Vijayan said the Left Democratic Front government in the State had made strides in all spheres of activity. The government’s anti-encroachment drive was well appreciated by the people. The health schemes launched soon after the government assumed power had good responses. It had been able to take on commercialisation of education.

As many as 312 party leaders selected at areas conferences held recently was participating, along with district committee members, in the conference.

Area-level group discussions were held on Sunday. The general discussions also began in the evening. It will continue on Monday. The election to the district committee will be held on Tuesday. Thirty-two people will be elected to represent the State committee and the conference in Kottayam.

District secretariat members P. Mohanan and M. Bhaskaran, Kozhikode Mayor, who briefed presspersons about the conference, said the government had helped the party grow in the State. This was revealed at the Thiruvambadi Assembly byelection where the CPI(M) candidate won.

The party viewed that minorities were getting closer to it. The influence of the party had increased in coastal belts of the district. The party would have sway over 50 per cent of the population in the district in future, they said.

The membership of the party at present was 22,896, while in 2004, it was 19,809. The number of branch committees increased to 2,047 in 2007 from 1,810 three years ago.
