KANNUR: Nearly 50 country-made bombs, large quantity of materials used for making bombs, long knives and iron rods were unearthed from near the premises of the offices of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (BJP-RSS) in various police station limits under the Thalassery police sub-divison here on Sunday.

The police said that the weapons were seized during a massive police raid conducted in areas under Panur, Chokli, Dharmadam, Kathirur, Koothuparamba and Kannavam police station limits that began at 8.30 a.m. and continued till 5.30 p.m.

Inspector General of Police A. Hemachandran and District Superintendent of Police Mathew Polycarp led the raid, the police said. Seven Deputy SPs, 14 Circle Inspectors, 20 Sub-Inspectors and over 100 police personnel took part in the raid following the clashes between CPI(M) and BJP-RSS workers near Kodiyeri late last night.

The IG and the SP sought the cooperation of the people in the area to provide information about places where weapons were hidden. The IG and the SP could be contacted over their mobile phones 9446424042 and 9447077600 respectively, the police said.

Meanwhile, tension was prevailing at Madappeedika at Kodiyeri, near Thalassery, following attacks on CPI(M) and RSS workers late Saturday.

Tension broke out at midnight when a group, alleged to be CPI(M) workers, stormed the house of RSS worker Shijil and attacked his parents Ramdas, 55, and Usha, 42, and brother Shigil. The assailants also hurled country-made bombs. The trio were admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital after they were injured in the attack.

The assailants also set on fire a two-wheeler parked at the house of RSS activist Lajeesh, whose house too came under attack, the police said.

In an alleged retaliation, CPI(M) worker and Thalassery municipal councillor P. Rajesh and his brother Ranjith were attacked at their house at Kommalvayal by suspected RSS workers.
