Patil to look into KCBC plea for committee

Kochi: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has assured leaders of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) here that he will look into their plea for constitution of a committee, on the lines of the Sachar committee, to study the status of Christians, especially Dalits in the religion.

The Minister gave this assurance on Saturday night during a meeting in which various issues, including protection of minority rights, were discussed, KCBC sources said. The discussions were over a dinner meeting with the newly elected KCBC president, Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil, and other council members.

They said the Archbishop wanted an assurance from the Home Minister with regard to protection of minority rights.

Their demands included reservation benefits for Dalit Christians and steps to prevent attacks against the Christian community in North India. — PTI
