Means for salvation

CHENNAI: The essence of Saiva Siddhanta contained in the philosophical doctrine (Sastras) of thinkers in Tamil and in the devotional hymns (Stotras) of the Saiva saints reflects Vedic truths and fosters love and devotion to Siva who is recognised as the Supreme Being. Saivism celebrates God’s glory and truth and reveals how it is possible for all beings to win God’s grace by worshipping Him. There are instances to show how even an ant or an elephant had engaged in worship and attained salvation.

This philosophy runs through the sentiments of love and devotion to the Lord that Saint Arunagirinathar experienced and most eloquently expressed in the Tiruppukazh when he sang Lord Muruga’s glory in spontaneous ecstasy, said Sri J. Mahadevan in a lecture. This work is an inspiration to the ordinary common folk who are caught in the temptations and attractions of worldly life that hinder them from treading the path of devotion.

The life of this saint exemplifies the truth that there is hope even for the most prodigal of beings. The fervent plea to the Lord to help him in his effort to remember Him at all times is striking. There is repeated reference to the truth that human birth is rare to obtain. Yet if it is not rightly used in worship of the Lord and service to his creatures, we shall have thrown away a golden opportunity. This saint stressed this truth of life and the message is the urgent need to get involved in the quest for salvation.

The Lord has chosen to reveal the path to this goal in myriad ways through the ages and religions and philosophies are helpful signposts in this regard. Just as all rivers having different names and flowing towards the sea lose their individual names and identity on merging with the waters of the ocean, religions and philosophies serve as a means to reach the ultimate truth. Those who have understood the true purpose of religion will not have any ill will against any other religion for they understand that all differences are merely skin deep. The sages and saints of all religions are unanimous in their finding that the soul can find everlasting happiness and peace only if self-realisation or communion with God is attained.
