dated December 17, 1957: Co-existence

The passing of the three-Power resolution on co-existence by the U.N. General Assembly was generally regarded in United Nations diplomatic circles as a victory for India’s persistent efforts to instil “a get-together feeling” among the 82-member States in spite of different political systems, blocs and mutual suspicions. Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon said, in the course of his speech in the Assembly, “I should like to express our appreciation to the Soviet Union delegation for allowing the joint draft resolution to be voted on first and also for not pressing a vote on its own.” He said that the draft resolution did not in any way “abbreviate the allegiance of the Government of India to the five principles as set forth in the Soviet resolution because they originated with us and we are not running away from them.”
