dated December 17, 1957: U.S. influence over Pak.

Mr. C.C. Desai, India’s High Commissioner in Pakistan, said in Bombay on December 15 that the American hold on Pakistan was complete in the fields of military intelligence and administration. In view of this, he added, when America assured India that not a shot would be fired against India by Pakistan, “there is reason to believe it as genuine assurance.” However, this should not lead to any complacency, Mr. Desai said. There was substantial military build-up in Pakistan with the help of the United States of America. India could not ignore the implications of the military build-up in Pakistan and she was forced to divert large sums of money every year on national defence to the detriment of her economy and the Second Five-Year Plan.
