COLOMBO: A middle-rung official delegation from India is here for three-day talks, beginning on Monday, on defence cooperation with Sri Lanka. According to knowledgeable sources, the delegation headed by a Joint Secretary each from the Ministry of External Affairs and Defence would review the gamut of the cooperation, including the air defence system. The effectiveness of the air defence system of the island nation has been a matter of focus after the LTTE demonstrated air capabilities through its nascent air wing for the first time in March and carried out three other attacks during the year. The air defence system was strengthened with the help of India after the March attack. Separately, the military claimed that LTTE ‘losses continued to soar’ during the past few days, following tactical military pursuit at LTTE bunker lines and offensive positions by the security forces. A statement by the Defence Ministry said 11 LTTE cadres were killed.
