HAPPY MOMENT: V.K. Venkataramani, Dean, Fisheries College and Research Institute, presenting a degree certificate in Tuticorin. Tuticorin: “There is an urgent need to ensure that ‘quality education’ is provided to entire marginalised and disadvantaged sections of the society to obtain social equality,” according to V.K. Venkataramani, Dean, Fisheries College and Research Institute. Delivering the convocation address at Annammal College of Education for Women here on Sunday, he said that steps should be taken to use education as a tool to weed out various disparities in the society, as envisaged by the National Education Policy. “Commercialisation of higher education should be discouraged to provide equal opportunities to all.” He stressed the need for expanding economic choices for the disadvantaged classes by imparting vocational education and skill development training to them. Mr. Venkataramani said that teachers would become ‘effective’ only if they succeeded in provoking knowledge to students. “Teachers should never be confined as ‘shopkeepers’ of knowledge rather they should help the students’ remove the cover of ignorance.” A good teacher should always be a good listener and communicator. He/she should ensure that interactions constituted an integral part of the classroom learning. According to him, development of curriculum should be a continuous process to suit the emerging needs of children. There should be more usage of teaching-learning materials right from the primary level of education. Students should be advised to use libraries more often to develop their knowledge. Mr. Venkataramani handed over degree certificates to 170 students who had successfully completed B. Ed and M. Ed courses from the college during 2006-07. N. Sudha Kumari, who bagged the first rank in M. Ed this year at university level, was awarded a medal. A. Fibyraj, Principal, and D. Ganesan, president of the college respectively, were present.
