PUDUKOTTAI: A State-level competition on ‘yoga’ held here recently provided an opportunity to students of various schools in parts of Tamil Nadu not only to exhibit their skill and knowledge in yoga but also to learn more about the nuances of practising its different forms.

The competition, sponsored jointly by Aathma Yoga Centre, Pudukottai, Rotary Club of Pudukottai and Rotaract Club of Pudukottai, was divided into 18 events.

Three categories

The participants were grouped in three major categories -- ‘general’ category for the first-time contestants; ‘special’ category for those who had won prizes in earlier annual contests; and ‘optional’ category for participants who exhibited their skill in both ‘yoga’ and essay-writing.

Explaining the importance of yoga, former Pudukottai Municipal Council chairman Durai Divyanathan said that it disciplined the mind and developed one’s skills without giving room for tension. He also emphasised the efficacy of yoga in healing several common ailments.

Rotaract Club of Pudukottai president R. Pandian said that students from 25 districts participated in the competition.

In the general category, students of Tiruchi district yoga association bagged the first prize. Students of ‘Chitra Yoga Centre’ from Neyveli and ‘Vivekananda Yogatherapy Institution’ from Karur bagged the first prize in the ‘special’ and ‘optional’ categories respectively.

Aathma Yoga Centre Director Yoga Bharathi Pandian said that in recognition of services rendered by institutions in the cause of promotion of yoga among students and masses, the ‘Yoga seva award 2007’ was conferred on heads of six educational institutions and office-bearers of two service organisations.
