Tamil Nadu
Union for revision in annual grant of temples
Staff Reporter
PUDUKOTTAI: The district unit of the Tamil Nadu Temple Employees’ Union has sought an upward revision in the annual grant of temples in Pudukottai in order to ensure proper maintenance. The upward revision has become inevitable in the wake of spiralling prices of gingelly oil and rice used for daily rituals its president S. Sethuraman said. Mr. Sethuraman said there were 200 temples under the jurisdiction of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department in the district. Barring a few temples such as those in Viralimalai and Tirumanancheri, a majority of the shrines, including historical monuments, lacked financial assistance.
“The sum is quite inadequate even for the rock-cut temples of Sri Sathya Perumal and Sri Sathyagiriswarar in Tirumayam.” He suggested that the department hike the annual grant to at least Rs.1 crore in order to improve the administration of temples in the district.
