Revert to old traffic system

The police have introduced a new traffic system on the Poonamallee High Road, that is, from the Ritherton Road Junction. All vehicles have to come straight up to the Central Railway Station and to take ‘U’ turn for reaching the Gandhi Irwin Bridge, or the Egmore Bridge for going to Mount Road, Chintadripet etc.

Bur, rather than reducing traffic congestion, the system has actually resulted in traffic chaos on the entire stretch from Ritherton Road to the Central Junction, leading to a serpentine queue of vehicles on all joining roads such as the Ritherton Road, the Sydenhams Road, and all along the Central Bridge up to Pallavan House. It is needless to point out that the Junction in front of the Central Railway Station is already chaotic with heavy movements of vehicles. The present diversion has made the matters worse.

All motorbike riders coming from North Chennai, especially from MKB Nagar, Kodungaiyur, Perambur etc. to Mount Road/Chintadripet are suffering a lot, by riding more than 3 to 5 km. Therefore, I request the authorities concerned to restore the old traffic system and post more efficient policemen to regulate the vehicles.

Last but not the least, the Government, which has constructed many bridges at various junctions of South Chennai, must construct one-way bridges all along the Poonamallee High Road to ensure a smooth flow of vehicles.

Stray cattle at Pozhichalur

The residents of Bajanai Koil Street, Pozhichalur find it difficult to driver vehicles or walk along the road because of stray cattle and dogs in the area. The dogs often chase the vehicles.

The problem gets worse owing to the poor condition of the road. Often the local authorities dig the road for some pipeline repair works. Afterwards the pits are not closed for a long time. Lorries run at high speed, unmindful of the school located there.

Stagnant water on the roadsides causes mosquitoes to breed, also emitting an unbearable stench.

It is requested that the authorities concerned should take proper action.

Declare T.M. Maistry Street one-way

Vehicular traffic on T. M. Maistry Street, Vannanthurai, Besant Nagar, has been on the rise, which is the link street to Tiruvanmiyur. All types of vehicles — two-wheelers, tempos, cars, school buses, lorries laden with sand and building materials, heavy vehicles etc. — ply round the clock.

As a result, there is no space for walkers.

Considering the plight of such people, will the traffic authorities declare T. M. Maistry Street as “one-way street”.

A welcome move

Though belated, the ban on using sun film (black) on car window glasses is appreciable. Likewise, the use of glaring headlights should be banned since it is also a vital cause for accidents at night. Not only lorries and cars but also latest two-wheelers are using dazzling lights, which cause total blindness, thereby leading to fatal accidents.

AIR reply

This has reference to the letter, ‘Music Festival,’ from A. Jagannathan of Nanganallur, published in these columns in The Hindu dated 10-12-2007. We are happy to inform that the All India Radio has made arrangements for broadcasting Chennai Music Festival concerts from different sabhas.

We have allotted three one-hour slots daily from December 16, 2007, as detailed below:

8-45 a.m. on Chennai ‘A’ (720 Khz) which will be relayed by other major AIR stations in Tamil Nadu.

7-25 a.m. and 5 p.m. on FM Gold (102.3 Mhz.)

The programmes will be relayed on our DTH channel also, enabling listeners in other parts of the country to listen to the same through the audio output of TV sets with Prasar Bharati DTH connections.

Our listeners may remember that last year also, we arranged a live relay of a few concerts for the full duration of 2-1/2 hours thanks to the cooperation of the Music Academy.

We hope to have live relay this year also if we get the consent of the artists.
