The Rs.5.21 crore project to be completed 20 months after the transfer Plan to interconnect Jor Bagh, Talkatora underground reservoirs NEW DELHI: To put an end to the long-running water problem in certain pockets of its area, the New Delhi Municipal Council has approved a scheme involving interconnecting of its water supply lines and construction of an additional underground tank. According to an NDMC official, the project involves construction of an underground tank with boosting arrangement on Kali Bari Marg. The 30-lakh-litre tank would be utilised to store water received from the Talkatora reservoir and further boost the pressure in the existing network. The vacant plot zeroed in by the NDMC for construction of the tank is owned by the Land and Development Office and a separate request for allotment has been made. The Rs.5.21 crore project is scheduled to be completed about 20 months after the transfer. The water supply to the NDMC area from Talkatora reservoir is through gravity flow but due to low water levels and short duration of water supply, pressure in the line is very low leading to complaints from Delhi Imperial Zone, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, MPs’ and Ministers’ Bungalow Area, President Estate and adjoining areas. In addition to the underground tank, the civic body will also undertake interconnection of underground reservoirs at Jor Bagh and Talkatora by providing and laying 300 mm dia line from Amrita Shergill Marg to Maulana Azad Road in order to improve the water supply from the Nizamuddin taping of the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant. This project, however, is subject to Delhi Jal Board’s commitment to provide additional water supply from the Sonia Vihar plant through the Nizamuddin taping. Said an NDMC member: “We have been experiencing water problem in the DIZ area for a very long time and nothing was being done to address it. We are now hoping that this interconnecting of our reservoirs will help in overcoming the water crisis by enabling channelising water from areas receiving excess water supply to those receiving scarce supply.” This interconnection of reservoir project is scheduled to be completed by July 2008. According to the NDMC, the necessity of interconnection of reservoirs was felt to be given top priority especially in the wake of recent water crisis in the DJB when it had to close down Wazirabad and Chandrawal water works because of high level of ammonia in the raw water received from Haryana.
