THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Aimed at highlighting the growing relevance of research in the field of biomedical applications, space exploration and material science using Raman Spectroscopy, a five-day International Conference on Perspectives in Vibrational Spectroscopy (ICPVS) will be held here from February 24. The conference, jointly organised by the Department of Physics, Mar Ivanios College, University of Kerala and Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment, promises to ensure its participants an opportunity to associate themselves with the “cream of India’s much-celebrated scientific community.” Major constraintsAccording to V.S. Jayakumar, convener of the conference, the non-availability of sophisticated instrumentation had been one of the major constraints for the Indian researchers. Though Raman spectroscopy was born in India eight decades back, the contributions towards advanced research using this application had been mostly from other nations. “There are a number of Indian research institutions, which aspire to apply Raman techniques in the field of research such as early detection and molecular level studies on cancer, single cell investigations, medical diagnostics, studies on natural products of medicinal plants and a host of other multi-disciplinary areas,” said Mr. Jayakumar. The State with its world class research institutions such as Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Regional Research Laboratory, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Regional Cancer Centre, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences, Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute, Centre for Earth Science Studies and the research departments of the University of Kerala had the potential to generate a vibrant pool of talented youth in different fields of science, he said. Pre-conference classA pre-conference class on Chemometrics, a new branch of science which helps extraction of maximum information from the spectral data available through experiments, will precede the conference on the same venue on February 23. The conference will feature plenary sessions, invited lectures, oral presentations, and serve as an interactive platform for scholars specialising in the field.
