4 rail overbridges to come up in Tirupur

Staff Reporter

Government to share 50 per cent of Rs. 74 crore

Project report to be prepared

TIRUPUR: In an effort to decongest Tirupur roads, the State Government has ordered the construction of four rail overbridges in the town at Rs.74 crore.

Two bridges at Rs. 20 crore each will come up at less than 300 metres’ distance in the town. The first elevated bridge will replace the railway crossing at Kongu Nagar (first railway gate), while another one will come up at Ramakrishnapuram (second railway gate). Rail overbridges will be constructed at Vanjipalayam and Koolipalayam at Rs.17 crore each.

While the Government has agreed to share 50 per cent of the total cost, the railways will spend the remaining amount. The recent Government Order has said that these works would be completed by 2011 and funds released in four instalments.

Highways Department sources said that a detailed project report would be prepared in consultation with the railway engineers.

After that, tenders would be floated for the work. While railways would construct the bridge on top of the railway lines, the remaining portions on both directions would be executed by the highways.

Citing the allocation of Rs.70 crore a year ago by the Government for widening major roads in Tirupur, C. Govindasamy, MLA, said that once the rail overbridges were constructed, ring roads around the town would be made optimal use.

‘Upgrade PHC’

The 15 Velampalayam town unit of Communist Party of India has appealed to the State Government to upgrade the primary health centre of Velampalayam to a 24-hour Government Hospital with additional beds.

The party has asked the highways, revenue and municipal authorities to remove encroachments on either side of the road from Anupparpalayam Pudur to Solipalayam.

It also demanded construction of an electric crematorium in Velampalayam.
