Centre to promote community policing

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil hails State’s proposed Janamaithri Suraksha Project

Foundation laid for traffic training school

Union government plans police university

Thrissur: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has said that the Union government plans to promote community policing.

He was addressing a meeting here on Sunday to lay the foundation for a traffic training school at the Kerala Police Academy.

“Community interaction and support can help control crime, and maintain law and order. The police-people ratio is low in India. One policeman is expected to provide security to 700 citizens. In all, 6.5 lakh villages have only 13,000 police stations. Approximately 400 km comes under the jurisdiction of a single police station. In this context, community policing assumes importance. I welcome the Kerala government’s proposed Janamaithri Suraksha Project, a community policing initiative,” he said.

Mr. Patil said the Centre was planning to set up a police university.

“The Union government provides Rs. 1,000 crore to States for modernising the police force every year. The States can expect more financial support.”

Training

Mr. Patil said policemen from neighbouring countries would be sent to the Kerala Police Academy for training.

“A few countries have approached India to provide training for their constabulary. Taming the mind should be one of the important aspects of training at police academies. Physical fitness and skills to use weapons alone do not create an ideal policeman. He should be disciplined and considerate of people. He should understand people’s problems. Tactful handling of situations can avoid some law and order problems,” he said.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, C. K. Chandrappan, MP, Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, Director General of Police Raman Srivastava, Additional Director General of Police Jacob Punnoos, ADGP (Training) S. Pulikesi were present.
