New Ranji format next season

Special Correspondent

Mumbai: The format of the Ranji Trophy has been changed from the 2008-09 season in order to facilitate the top teams in the Plate Group compete for the title.

From the 2008-09 season, three teams each from the two groups in the Super League and the top two teams in the Plate Group will play a knock-out from the quarterfinal stage.

As a consequence, the Plate Group knock-out will be done away with and the prize-money restructured.

At the BCCI Working Committee at the Cricket Centre on Sunday, it was decided to increase the infrastructure subsidy from Rs. 25 crore to Rs. 50 crore.

The Working Committee also ratified the appointments of Gary Kirsten as coach of the Indian team, Dav Whatmore as Director, Operations, National Cricket Academy, and a few more experts who will be assisting Whatmore at the Bangalore-based academy.

The committee approved the participation of England ‘A’ in the Duleep Trophy to be played in the West Zone in January 2008, and the India under-19 team’s tour of South Africa.

Raman appointed coach

Tamil Nadu’s W.V. Raman has been appointed coach of the India under-19 team for the tri-series in South Africa. Whatmore is likely to accompany the team to Malaysia for the ICC under-19 World Cup.

Earlier, the BCCI’s Special General Body Meeting adopted a resolution that regularised the formation of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a committee of the BCCI.

The BCCI also announced that Bengal’s Manoj Tiwari will receive the M.A. Chidambaram Trophy under-22 cricketer of the year award instead of Delhi’s Abhinav Bali, who has joined the Indian Cricket League.

With regard to the demands made by the chairman of selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar, the Working Committee decided that it was up to the BCCI office-bearers to deal with the issue.

“As of now, the seven-point guideline will stay,” said Srinivasan, Treasurer, BCCI.

The Working Committee also accepted the recommendation of the Media Committee to ban the Nagpur-based journalist Ajay Nayudu from attending all activities of the BCCI for a period of two years.
