Tamil Nadu
Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Madurai districts have been facing frequent power cuts for the past one month now. As a result, business activities and routine life of people have been disrupted. The public are showing their anguish over this sorry state of affairs through various forums. The lethargic attitude of officials concerned in power sector has led to acute power crisis . The authorities should learn lessons from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on handling power generation. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Vazhavallan, Tuticorin district. Pension paymentPayment of pension to central, civil and military people hitherto handled by State Bank of India branches in Tamil Nadu has been centralised from August 2007 to overcome the problem of staff shortage. While they will continue to draw their pension from respective branches, pension amount is now being credited into their account by the Chennai office of the bank through computer network. This has resulted in difficulties to pensioners. In some cases, pension credited is less than entailments. Pensioners have to approach local branch to get the difference credited. Though there may be initial teething problems in any change introduced in the system, the problem persists even after four months of the change.
A.N.S. Govindasamy, Kovilpatti. IIThe other day, a Rajya Sabha member with tears rolling down his eyes lamented that elders would have to resort to legal course for getting their rightful shares. The next day, the Supreme Court upheld the contention of the All India Federation of Port and Dock Pensioners’ Association (The Hindu, December, 9) and directed the Port Trust to remove anomalies in pension for those retired before and after 1998. Analogous situations are also existing in other public sector undertakings including banks and LIC. N. Kasilingam, Tuticorin. Bus serviceThough Kanyakumari district is endowed with many heritage sites, pilgrim centres and sightseeing locations, tourists are constrained to visit these places, owing to lack of sufficient link bus service. V. Kumar, Thekkurichy, Kanyakumari district.
