“Congress stand on LTTE is firm”

Special Correspondent

Leader flays party activists flouting organisational discipline

Asks leaders to restrain themselves while expressing views on intra-party affairs

Mechanism evolved to monitor implementation of various schemes

PUDUCHERRY: Secretary of the All India Congress Committee in charge of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry K.B. Krishnamurthy on Monday made it clear that there was no change in the party’s stand with regard to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Replying to queries on reports relating to certain organisations in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory extending support to the LTTE, he told newspersons here that the Congress had been adopting a “very firm stand” on the issue.

Asked if the Congress would demand action against outfits that overtly supported the LTTE, he said the party’s working committee had already taken a clear decision with regard to the banned organisation. The party continued to adopt the stand, he added.

Replying to queries on the war of words between rival groups of Congressmen, Mr. Krishnamurthy flayed party activists who rushed to the media, openly airing views against leaders and flouting the organisational discipline.

“I advise all my fellow Congressmen and leaders to restrain themselves while expressing views on intra-party affairs. If the party activists had any grouse, they could raise it in the party forums instead of making controversial statements,” he said.

Clear guidelines

To a question, he said the Central Government had laid down clear guidelines for the implementation of the Special Component Plan for promoting the welfare of the Dalits.

The State Governments and the Governments in the Union Territories should adopt those guidelines in letter and spirit, he added.

The AICC had evolved a mechanism to monitor the implementation of various schemes sponsored by the Centre in the Congress-ruled States. The party leadership had also been guiding these Governments in introducing legislations and schemes needed for the benefit of the people, Mr. Krishnamurthy said.

As part of preparations for the next Lok Sabha poll, the Congress would like to take care of the party activists, besides recognising their service to the organisation through re-allocation of work in the party and making nominations at the Government level in the States.

Reaching out

The party would reach out to the people with the message of several progressive schemes implemented by the United Progressive Alliance Government, he added.

It had been the goal of the Congress that the party and its alliance partners should win the next Lok Sabha poll. The Congress, the Left and the secular parties should unitedly face the poll to defeat the “communal forces”, he said.

He also commended the Congress Government in Puducherry for implementing schemes, including those to bring the UT into the international tourism map. He held discussions with Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on some of the new projects and proposals of the UT Government.

Mr. Krishnamurthy also interacted with Pradesh Congress Committee chief P. Shanmugam, legislators, local body representatives and Congress functionaries at different levels.
