Important role of Tamils in IT companies highlighted “Training in IT will help enhance job prospects, become self-sufficient” CHENGAM: The Chengam panchayat union in Tiruvannamalai district has been making concerted efforts to educate rural youth in Information Technology. Chengam is the first block in the district where a Village Knowledge Centre (VKC) was inaugurated recently. MLA M.K. Vishnuprasad inaugurated the centre at a function organised at Pakkripalayam on Thursday. Speaking at the inaugural function of the VKC, jointly organised by the Empowering Mahilas for Meaningful Action (EMMA) and Professor Govindan Memorial Education Trust, Andhanur, Dr. Vishnuprasad said the Tamil community played an important role in most multi-national IT companies across the country and abroad. The interesting aspect was that most Tamils employed in IT companies were from rural areas across the State. This major transformation reflected that receiving training in IT enabled services was not difficult. Youngsters needed to show an interest to learn and must adapt easily to changing environments. He said more youth, particularly those from rural areas, should come forward to get trained in IT enabled services. This would help them enhance their job prospects and become economically self-sufficient. He said there were only two categories of people currently — literates and illiterates. In the future, a situation would arise where people would be differentiated as computer skilled and unskilled. He lauded the Chengam Panchayat Union Chairman, G. Kumar, for striving to promote IT in rural areas. Initially, two computer systems have been installed at the Centre. Mr. Kumar told The Hindu that depending on the success of the concept at Pakkripalayam, it would be extended to other panchayats in the Chengam Panchayat Union. About 1,000 members from Self-Help Groups participated in the function, attended by representatives of various NGOs.
