Making a point: Member of the Karnataka Science and Technology Academy P.S. Shankar speaking at a function to inaugurate a training programme for high school teachers in Gulbarga on Monday.

GULBARGA: Member of the Karnataka Science and Technology Academy P.S. Shankar on Monday stressed the need for fine-tuning the teaching skills of teachers in primary and high schools through continuous training programme in modern methods of teaching and continuing education programmes to ensure high pass percentage in terminal examinations.

Training

Speaking at a function to inaugurate a three-day training programme for high school teachers in Gulbarga taluk in basic science and mathematics, Dr. Shankar, who is the Medical Director of Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital and Mahadevappa Medical College, said one of the reasons for the low pass percentage in the SSLC examination in Gulbarga district was lack of modern teaching skills among many teachers.

To overcome this problem, Dr Shankar said, the Science and Technology Academy had decided to initiate training programmes in modern teaching methods to primary and high school teachers, particularly in districts where the pass percentage in SSLC examination was low.

He said that the training programmes had yielded desired results in a few districts including Yadgir Education District which had improved its pass percentage in the SSLC examination this year after being placed last in the 2006 examination.

The academy decided to extend the training programme to Gulbarga district this year to improve the pass percentage in Gulbarga Education District.

A large number of teachers from government, aided and unaided high schools in Gulbarga taluk were participating in the training programme conducted by senior professors and lecturers of Gulbarga University. Importance was being given for improving the teaching standards in basic sciences and mathematics, he said.
