‘Innovation improves quality of distance education’

‘Growing demand makes it imperative to encourage correspondence course’



FOR SELF-STUDY: Director of Distance Education Council of IGNOU Swaraj Basu inaugurating the workshop on ‘preparation of self-instructional material’ at Kuvempu University in Shimoga on Monday.

SHIMOGA: Swaraj Basu, Director of the Distance Education Council of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), emphasised on Monday the need to take note of the innovation made in the promotion of the open and the distance education at the international level to enhance qualitative improvement in the distance education courses being offered in the country.

He was inaugurating a two-day workshop on “preparation of self-instructional material” (SIM) organised by the Directorate of Correspondence Courses of the Kuvempu University at Jnana Sahyadri — the university campus at Shankaraghatta about 25 km from here.

Manjulika Srivatsava of the Distance Education Council of IGNOU is attending the workshop as the resource person.

University Registrar R. Udaykumar was the chief guest.

University Vice-Chancellor B.S. Sherigara, who presided over the inaugural function, said the conventional universities should give more importance for the promotion of distance education courses in view of the growing demand for higher education.

Distance Education Directorate director at the university S.A. Bari, who welcomed the gathering, outlined the objectives behind holding the two-day workshop on SIM.

Deputy Director of the Distance Education Directorate at the university N.K. Gouda proposed a vote of thanks.

About 250 lecturers were attending the workshop.
