‘They have not been paid salary for the past nine months’ GULBARGA: Daily wage workers employed in the social forestry wing of the Forest Department in Gulbarga district on Monday decided to postpone their scheduled “Raj Bhavan chalo” and dharna in Bangalore on December 21 following intervention by Governor Rameshwar Thakur. The daily wage workers have not been paid their salary for the past nine months. They have been staging a dharna in front of the office of the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat for the past 124 days, according to the workers. President of the Daily Wage Workers’ Union Chandrasekhar Hiremath told presspersons that responding to a memorandum submitted during the Janata Darshan programme, the Governor had directed the officials of the Forest Department to look into the reasons for non-payment of salary to daily wage workers and submit a report to him on the matter at the earliest. Mr. Hiremath said that the officials had intimated the office of the Governor seeking some more time for submitting their report on the matter. ThreatHe said that if the Forest Department did not address the problem, the daily wage workers would be forced to organise “Raj Bhavan chalo” and dharna in Bangalore on January 15.
