Milk procurement set to touch one lakh litres per day

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: Known for its frequent drought conditions, Anantapur district is on the threshold of achieving a mini milk revolution with the daily procurement of milk in the organised sector, Government dairy, reaching 95,000 litres.

It was just about 60,000 litres six months back and the officials are hopeful that it will reach one lakh litres soon.

Being promoted as an alternative source of income, dairy farming is assuming significance in the rural areas with the help of measures being taken up to improve the breed of milch animals.

District Collector N. Sridhar has set the target of procurement of milk at 2 lakh litres by the end of next year.

There are two dairies at Anantapur and Hindupur and 19 bulk milk cooling centres across the district. About 800 villages are connected to 31 milk routes now for the procurement of about 95,000 litres a day.

The district administration, with the involvement of SHGs, takes pride for the fact that the district stands fifth in the State today in milk procurement.

Cooling units

Another 32 bulk cooling units were sanctioned to the district as part of the Chief Minister’s package and they will all be set up by the March-end. The officials of Indira Kranti Patham have been directed to include the villages falling in the purview of the bulk cooling units to be set up in the total financial inclusion (TFI) scheme and extend loans to SHG women for taking up dairy farming.

Under the ‘Pashukranti’ scheme the district has already got 550 out of 3,500 high-breed buffaloes and calves and the second lot of animals will be brought from Punjab and Haryana soon.

The ‘murra’ breed buffaloes from the northern parts of the country are expected give high milk yield. The Collector also asked the officials to concentrate on the areas, where the milk procurement is low.
