BERHAMPUR: Students of the Khallikote autonomous college boycotted classes and demonstrated demanding deemed university status to their institute on Monday. Led by the president of the students’ union, Gourahari Bisoi, and secretary, Dilip Kumar Tanti, the students locked up the front gate of the institution. The students were of the opinion that this more than a century-old institution of the State deserves to be declared a deemed university. They asked the State Government to initiate immediate measures for the purpose. It was the first institution of the State to get accredited by the NAAC of the UGC. The UGC has also accepted this institution in the list of 97 colleges of the country chosen as colleges with Potential for Excellence (CPE) last year with provision of special grants. Owing to the agitation by the students, the examinations that were to be conducted at the institution had to be cancelled. According to college authorities, the next date for these examinations would be declared later.
