Sandalwood smugglers held

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: Two persons were arrested and nearly 30 kg of sandalwood seized by the Mavelikara police on Monday.

The police said that a patrol team led by Mavelikara sub-inspector Sunil Raj was on a routine round when it came across a car moving in suspicious circumstances. With the car speeding away as soon as the occupants saw the police jeep, the patrol team chased them.

The driver of the car, after nearly half an hour of intense chase, lost control and rammed a wall. Even as the car overturned, three occupants jumped out and fled while two, Kishore Babu and Santosh Kumar, sustained injuries and could not escape. The police arrested the duo and found that they were smuggling around eight pieces of sandalwood stolen from near the Mavelikara court.

The arrested had been remanded to judicial custody and further investigation was on.
