Cattle rescued

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: The district administration has decided to implement the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act strictly in the district from Monday.

District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan, who got information on a herd of buffalo and a few cows being packed like sardines and transported through the town in a small pickup van, alerted the North Police who rescued the animals.

The cattle were being taken from Koothatukulam in Kottayam to Alappuzha this morning. A case has been registered against the driver, Gopalakrishnan, and one Haneef, for whom the cattle were being brought to Alappuzha. The rescued animals have been sheltered in the North Police Station.

The Collector said the Act would be implemented without fail in the coming days. A meeting convened by him on Sunday had decided to entrust the police with the job of implementing the act, he said.
