APSRTC denies move to privatise services

‘The corporation does not have funds to procure new buses’

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC on Monday denied that it was contemplating to privatise the organisation, as indicated by release of tender notification for hiring of 1,500 buses.

The APSRTC Executive Director stated: “there is absolutely no basis in the allegation or presumption that any privatisation of APSRTC services is contemplated.”

Fund crunch

A press release said although the corporation was earning profits since 2006-07 it could not generate the funds required for procurement of a large number of buses.

Hence, it was hiring buses on public-private partnership basis to supplement its own procurement of buses.

The release clarified that hiring of buses by the corporation was not new; it has been in vogue for two decades. No employee would be displaced following induction of the hired buses, it said.
