‘Low teacher turnout for valuation delays results’

Chitra V. Ramani

Bangalore: Bangalore University students have become accustomed to delays in valuation of answer scripts and announcement of results. University officials lay the blame on the semester system and on the teachers who do not come for valuation duty. Rubbishing their claims, K.G. Lokesh, president of Bangalore University College Teachers’ Association (BUCTA), said that 99 per cent of the government and aided college teachers turn up for valuation duty. “There are three categories of college teachers — government, aided, and private, unaided college teachers. By and large, the government and aided college teachers attend valuation; otherwise their salaries are cut.”

Mr. Lokesh blamed the delay in valuation and announcement of results on many private and unaided colleges not following the calendar of events set by Bangalore University. There has to be a regulation that is applicable to all college teachers, he said. “It is the managements of the private and unaided colleges that are uncooperative sometimes.” Low remuneration is another reason. BUCTA recently urged the university to increase the payment of unaided and private college teachers, though aided and government college teachers do not get paid, he said. “Karnataka is the only State that is depriving teachers of remuneration,” he added.
