The gang, including a woman, made over Rs. 3 lakh in three to four months The accused telephoned people who evinced interest in taking fresh credit cards CHENNAI: Public should not furnish finer details of their existing credit/debit cards to people who claimed themselves to be executives/representatives of some banks/financial institutions, police said. In a recent case, the Flower Bazaar police personnel, who secured a 28-year-old person of a gang on Sunday, found that he had been allegedly cheating many people, promising them new credit /debit cards. The gang, which included a young woman, had cheated people and made over Rs. 3 lakh in about three to four months, the police said. Modus operandiExplaining the modus operandi, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Flower Bazaar) P. Balachandran said preliminary investigations revealed that the accused along with four persons telephoned people, who evinced interest in taking fresh credit cards. Soon, they would request the persons to give photocopies of basic particulars such as salary certificate, proof of address and details of existing debit cards, including the PIN number. Following a complaint from Mohammed Sirajudeen of Mannadi, the Flower Bazaar police registered a case and were on the look out for the gang. Based on the confessions from Umesh of Tirumazhisai, Tiruvallur district, the police arrested him on charges of cheating. The gang had spent the money withdrawn from the ATMs lavishly and evaded arrest so far. A hunt is on to secure the other members of the gang , Mr. Balachandran said.
