Gujarat polls

The credit for the peaceful conduct of the election process in Gujarat goes to the Election Commission of India. There was hardly any report of violence from any part of the State, which witnessed widespread communal riots five years ago. This, despite political parties doing their best to create communal divisions to gain votes.

The people of Gujarat have realised that they cannot be made scapegoats in the games political parties play. By participating overwhelmingly in the election process, they have shown that democracy cannot be defeated under any circumstances.

The article, “Modi versus the rest in Gujarat (Dec. 15)” made an interesting analysis of the Gujarat election. As rightly pointed out, the Congress has arithmetic on its side but Narendra Modi whipped up such a frenzy that the electoral contest became a touch and go affair.

The possibility of a hung Assembly cannot be ruled out thanks to the huge number of rebel candidates in the fray. It is now time to wait and see which way the voters of Gujarat, who had a golden opportunity to save secularism that is in peril in the State, have swung.

J. Anantha Padmanabhan,

Srirangam True, arithmetic favours the Congress but psychology seems to favour Mr. Modi. The article (and the series on Gujarat) makes one visualise the battle for the State. The author has absorbed the situation on the ground and written it with great intensity.

Yogesh C. Parmar,

Gandhinagar
