Needed, tough laws

I am unable to agree with the view that in the fight against terrorists and criminals, the state seems to want laws that are arbitrary in nature (“Laws without justice in the name of security,” Dec. 17). The article highlights only one side of the picture.

Rights activists should not be unmindful of the fact that India is under the shadow of terrorism. Violent agitations and massacres are not infrequent. To fight this menace and to protect the rights of innocent civilians, stringent and deterrent laws are necessary, though there may be instances of abuse of authority.
