Letters to the Editor
That the government has passed the Maintenance of the Welfare of Parents and other Senior Citizens Bill is heartening. At the same time, it is shocking to find some arguing that parents should find ways to fend for themselves in their old age. Our unique family system is part of our Indianness. It is this aspect that sets us apart from the rest of the world. Indian parents do not think of themselves; they only dream of a good future for their sons and daughters. The view that people should not beget children if they cannot look after themselves in their old age shows that even our thinking is in tune with the so-called globalisation. Fr.
